Bespoke steel frame design solutions

In collaboration with an architectural practice specializing in Mini Golf Adventure Parks, Vale Consultancy designed a four-storey steel-framed adventure golf course, 500 feet below ground within a large cavern. The design was modeled in 3D to ensure it fit precisely within the cavern’s boundaries and avoided clashes with the uneven surfaces. To achieve this, the cavern was initially surveyed using point cloud surveying software, a cutting-edge technology.

Given that the only access to the site was via a steep inclined manrider, logistics for delivering materials were carefully considered during the design stage. The principal contractor also approached us to assist in designing a bespoke railway cart that could use the existing manrider tracks for transporting materials down the incline.

To complement the unique experience within the cavern, the lateral bracing of the frame was carefully designed to minimize visual impact. For this, we developed a scheme using cable stays for bracing, anchored to the slate cavern walls, rather than traditional steel section bracing.
