Protecting the future of historic buildings

Grade 1 Listed Hensol Castle, dating back to the 15th century, has been owned by various wealthy families and extended over the years. The Castle and Estate are now privately owned and have been carefully restored to provide hotel, conference, leisure, and residential facilities.

We were appointed as Civil and Structural Engineers to deliver sympathetic and complex structural designs for the Castle.

Our work included the construction of a large basement behind the Castle, with a reinforced concrete service tunnel running beneath the rear courtyard and entering under a service core at the rear of the Castle. This required concrete underpinning in parts of the Castle to create an additional basement storey, in addition to obtaining Listed Building Consent and approval from CADW.

Throughout the project, our goal was to work closely with the client and developer, acting as lead consultant, to preserve the Castle’s period features and ensure it retained its historic charm.
