About Us

Formed as a family business in 2005, Vale Consultancy originally by providing civil and structural engineering services to key clients in South Wales, and to the local community in the Vale of Glamorgan. Since then, Vale Consultancy has established itself as a well renowned and respected engineering consultancy with a work force of near twenty strong, providing a broad range of engineering services across Wales and much of England.

We are not a corporate entity and the Directors have a hands on approach to design. As the company has grown and continues to undertake larger projects, we will ensure we continue to provide a valued service to local communities and private clients. We enjoy meeting and working with local people, communities and design teams, and the personable approach required for this type of work forms the ethos of our working methods on larger projects.

Our goal is to provide practical solutions to often problematic challenges, whilst always having a focus on cost and quality. Vale Consultancy’s Engineers will always be proactive, personable and will provide an economic solution within a timescale to meet our client’s deadlines. We take great satisfaction by embracing challenging engineering projects, and providing a solution which enhances the architectural aesthetics of the end product.

We work with private home owners and business owners, developers, contractors, architects, and the public sector to ensure that their aspirations are achieved.

Matt Jones Managing Director

Matt started his engineering journey at Leeds and Penn State Univariates obtaining a degree in Master of Architectural Engineering. Working in both Cardiff and London, Matt became Chartered in first Structures and subsequently Civil Engineering, before moving back to South Wales and re-joining the family business, Vale Consultancy in 2005. As Managing Director of Vale Consultancy, first working on his own from home, Matt has grown the company to the well respected medium sized consultancy it is today.

Matt holds a vast experience in the design of all types of building structures, ranging from small scale structural designs for residential extensions, to substantial reinforced concrete and steel frames for larger commercial schemes. In Civil Engineering, Matt has significant experience in sustainable drainage and infrastructure design.  

Jon Mathias Director

Jon is a highly experienced structural engineer with over 25 years’ experience in engineering consultancy. He has designed numerous projects both large and small up to a value of £10 million. Jon’s experience ranges from small dwellings, housing estates to hotels, hospitals and apartment developments. He has also worked closely with the design development, co-ordination and detailing of many governmental building contracts, including the HMPS and HMCS throughout Wales and the south east of the UK.

Leighton Roberts Technical Director

Leighton is a retired Regional Director of one of the UKs leading multi-disciplined consultancies with over 50 years’ experience as a Civil Engineer in infrastructure and the built environment. He has ran and managed a significant portfolio, including the financial control and outcomes of large projects in the private, public, and commercial sector, with insight beyond his core discipline to deliver the clients vision. He has written technical papers, provided expert witness of urban drainage at planning appeals, and activity involved as part of the national policy for Sustainable Drainage.

He has created systems and processes to benchmark, learn, and ensure continuously improved performance of the civil engineering business unit.

Chris Newby Principal Engineer

Chris is an experienced Structural Engineer working with concrete, timber, aluminium & steelwork design for both Commercial and Residential projects, with experience in all types of building and retaining structures. Chris designs high specification and large scale projects with values ranging from £1k-£20M+; including specialist industrial structures and bespoke architectural residential properties. Chris is currently scheduled to sit the Chartered Professional Accreditation exam with the IStructE in September 2021.

Nick Clifford Principal Engineer

With over 25 years experience in Civil & Structural Engineering, Nick has designed super and sub structures in all the major construction materials, for Commercial, Residential, Educational, Governmental (Police, Prison & Court & MOD), NHS trusts, Transportation (Airports) and WDA projects, both as new build and as alterations/extensions to existing buildings. Nick has also undertaken building surveys for fault diagnosis & repair, assessments prior to structural alterations and change of use. 

In addition to structural design Nick have developed a sound general knowledge of civil engineering aspects, especially those associated with building structures.

Nicole Freegard Senior Engineer

Nicole is a Structural Engineer who has been working with Vale Consultancy for over 2 years. She has a Masters with Honours in Civil Engineering at the University of Liverpool; and since graduating Nicole has gained over 4 years of valuable industry experience working on projects ranging from large scale steel and concrete framed student accommodation, steel superstructure, and detailed connection design, to residential projects of varying scale with values of £1.5k to £1M.

Since working with Vale Consultancy, Nicole has been involved in a wide variety of projects from small bespoke home improvements, to larger scale designs working alongside Local Housing Associations in the South Wales region, and industry leading Architects.

Freddy Payne Senior Engineer

Freddy is a Senior Engineer at Vale Consultancy, with experience in most aspects of highway design such as alignment, pavement, drainage, road restraint and also kerbs, footways and paved areas. He has worked closely with standards such as the DMRB, manual for streets and local council requirements. He has experience using AutoCAD, Civil3D, Site3d & Microdrainage.

Freddy has worked on a variety of large and small projects and currently focuses on sustainable drainage SAB applications and approvals.

Freddy prides himself on having diverse experience, giving an example of designing heavy duty pavement for a shipping port which involved calculating loading requirements for use of the industrial vehicles. The aim was to provide an optimised design to reduce costs by choosing readily available and suitably specified materials.

Robin Powell Civil Engineer

Robin is a technician member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and has extensive experience in the production of preliminary and detailed drawings utilising the latest computer technology and software packages. Robin has the experience of Civil and Structural Engineering fields and the production of highway and drainage drawings, together with structural steelwork and reinforced concrete detailing.

Joel Wall Civil Engineer

Joel is a Civil Engineer who has a wide range of experience in the residential, retail and industrial sectors working on a wide range of Civil and Structural Engineering projects. Joel has gained years of experience working on a varied scale of works from small extensions to 7ha industrial sites.

Joel has invaluable experience in structural steel, retaining walls and below ground structural design; much of his work is now focused on Sustainable Drainage and external works.
